underwear," a notion that has long inspired my dreams of retreating to a locale blessed with clement weather, seeking solace in the dappled shade of trees. It is a primal dwelling, akin to the hut depicted on the frontispiece of Marc-Antoine Laugier’s "Essai sur l'architecture." This abode is a vessel of Tongtou—transparency and permeability—where the ambient landscape, aromas, humidity, and zephyrs are free to traverse. A domicile interwoven with currents of air and light is the genesis of this architectural endeavor. Malaga, in the southern reaches of Spain, boasts an average annual temperature ranging from 17-31℃ and enjoys a perennially dry climate. The elements outside, such as rain and wind, are more akin to precious gifts than adversaries. My aspiration is to harness these endowments within the confines of this residence. Semper's classification of the four elements of architecture as the hearth, the roof, the enclosure, and the mound serves as a guiding principle. In this modest dwelling, I prioritize wind and water as the "hearth," the nucleus of habitation. I introduce a vapor/wind space interstitial to "the roof, the enclosure, and the mound," akin to a respiratory system. The house is thus enabled to breathe gently, embracing the wind and rain. The exterior maintains the silhouette of a pitched-roof structure, echoing the context of Malaga, while the interior unfolds as a continuous arcade. The interior vaulting evokes a sense of primitivity, a metaphorical cave. The concrete vault transitions into a handcrafted pottery container, offering a cozy and serene habitat. I am often reminded of a photograph of Salvatore Fiume's clay sculpture studio, where the arched ceiling and the curved clay sculptures compose a tranquil, enigmatic, and even sacred spectacle. The curved form and handcrafted texture bestow a softness and gentleness upon everything. The curve begins to define clear spatial directions on the plane, and the expansion, reduction, and flow within the space.” As people and life enter this space, they are more inclined to navigate it, with each segment of life seamlessly integrated into this continuous field, which Toyo Ito refers to as the “Dynamic Zone.” Ito creates this poetic space in the “House Nakano,” also known as “White U.” In this circular house, designed for his sister following the loss of her spouse, Ito aspires to use the curved space to provide a soft, gentle, and tranquil haven. The pure white interior space dissolves light and air, making them integral to the wall and space. Ito hopes that his sister can immerse herself in this airy space to dissipate the sorrows of the past. Ito also designs a central “Dormant Zone” to offer a peaceful space devoid of disturbances: a yard with black soil surrounded by a circular concrete wall. In our project, the black-soiled yard is replaced by a mirror-like pool incubating powerful silence. One emanates from the disjointed wall and base (the mound); the strip light casts shadows on the ground. The 1.5-meter height difference and the ramps at both ends allow the light belt to rise from the ground to the eye level and descend to the ankle again. Circumnavigating the pool, one can witness the light beneath one's feet gradually transform into the bright spectacle before you. The other strip light originates from the gap between the wall and the roof, gently cascading from top to bottom of the wall into the pool. The gap admits light as well as wind and rain. The wind dances through at ankle level while the rain drips from the skylight gap, shading the wall with light. Light, wind, and rain frequently play and flirt with people. The staggered axis, curved ceilings, lowered side porches, and the altar leading to the courtyard create a sense of sacredness leading to elsewhere. The dim, tunnel-like hall naturally directs pilgrims' gazes to the altar, illuminated by daylight. The vines on the altar backwall suggest the courtyard on the east side, which also symbolizes revival and hope. The semi-circular platform before the water is the starting and ending point of the house. It connects the dining area and the studio, the worldly life and spiritual practice. It is an altar, where one can pray and meditate; one can also idle and sleep. It evokes the imagery of a troubadour's mantle, the flared skirt of a flamenco dancer, or the transient stage of Gypsy performers, akin to a makeshift circus tent. The vibrant red hue cuts a striking figure against the verdant backdrop, resonating with the Arc de Triomf along the palm-fringed boulevard a stone's throw away. This draws both locals and visitors to a communal plaza of music and dance, a stage for playful performances. The minimalist triangular geometry and sculpted volume, coupled with the intentional cantilever, establish a dynamic equilibrium, reminiscent of a dance pose by Martha Graham. The structure exudes an ethereal sense of weight. Three slender pillars, along with the corners of the envelope, gently kiss the earth, minimizing disruption to the pristine turf while rekindling the al fresco ambiance. The impervious fiber-reinforced membrane wall accentuates the anti-gravitational aesthetic and pays homage to the timeless fabric of tent-theater heritage. Patrons opting not to use the main entrance can "slink" into the venue by stooping and bending, embodying the spirit of stealth. This "theater" challenges the gentrification and elitism often associated with contemporary performance spaces. Performances should be an open dialogue with civic art, intertwined with the ethos of urbanity and street culture. The theater should serve as a communal canvas for public life, rather than an outcast like street performers. Within the theater, the gap between the building envelope and the ground unfurls like a panoramic scroll, underscoring the symbiotic relationship with the environs, where both backdrop and stage are intertwined. The performers within and the onlookers without, the spectators inside and the passersby outside, all blend their roles: everyone is both spectator and performer in this shared experience. The "stage" floor of the theater is a sunken basin, echoing the contours of a Roman amphitheater. The sloping terrain amplifies the performers' movements and enhances acoustic resonance. Intentionally devoid of dressing rooms, preparation areas, and other backstage utilitarian spaces, the interior maintains the raw texture of a public square. This approach also mitigates the managerial challenges and potential security risks associated with enclosed spaces during off-hours. However, on this oldest land of American Continent, we aspire to craft a black box, a dim chamber, a dark ark that emerges from the earth. The entire structure is enveloped in deliberately aged dark cast steel plates, with a rough texture that resonates with the surrounding soil and bark; it is also designed to withstand the erosion of wind and rain: for it was intended from the outset to be unpolished. Mud and debris seem to spread onto the building, and its skin anticipates the symbiosis of moss and scratches over time. Despite its elongated volume, the shadow of trees against the dark skin grants it the art of blending into the environment. The pavilion is designed with a visible U-shaped roof and a concealed U-shaped "stream" within/below the structure. The U-shaped roof inverts the traditional vault motif of Étienne-Louis Boullée's Royal Library; its soaring gesture aims to break the monumental heaviness and create a sense of lightness. During the rainy season, rainwater collects in this vast U-shaped "rain channel," cascading down; the rain striking the drum-like structure below produces an irregular symphony of thunderous sounds, creating a wild landscape of auditory and visual experience. Subsequently, the rainwater falls into the circular pond at the entrance and fills the U-shaped trough beneath the building. The facade's upturned roof and exposed structural elements echo the primitive shed prototype. The design of the roof detached from the main structure naturally leaves gaps for ventilation and lighting at the top; the ground is also elevated from the soil, responding to Mexico's hot and humid climate. The rapid change in illumination causes a momentary "blindness," and details in view slowly come into focus later. The roof, walls, entrance, and structural columns each detach, avoiding a light band that penetrates through the cabin, with light not just entering but creeping in. The ground's glass blocks refract the soft light diffused from the earth below. The visual center is the crystal sanctuary covered with circular grooved glass blocks on the sloping roof. The U-shaped roof seems to channel all the light from the side skylights into it. The water in the troughs beneath the building reflect the shimmering light, mapping onto and dancing across the glass bricks, bestowing them with spirit and radiance. As one steps into the sanctuary, the sight is of a grotto church seemingly etched with ancient scripts. In my youth, before any new cardboard containers were consigned to the scrap heap, I would reclaim them, transforming them into "building blocks." For the design of the exhibition hall featuring UNO brand furniture, to reflect the brand's focus on artisanal quality and lightness, and to channel personal childhood recollections, origami emerged as the design's genesis. <img width="4000" height="2250" width_o="4000" height_o="2250" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/643d808814515ab88d1721c99a449931b31c366e6283b288986a258bbe740583/4-copy.png" data-mid="160933789" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/643d808814515ab88d1721c99a449931b31c366e6283b288986a258bbe740583/4-copy.png" />Rather than compartmentalizing the exhibition hall into discrete rooms, we envisioned it as a constellation of houses, each sculpted as individual boxes. The arrangement of these boxes draws inspiration from the formal logic of traditional Chinese courtyards, with their sequential progression through conventional "Triple In &amp; Out". As an indoor exhibition venue, the courtyard motif carves out an "open-air" spatial configuration, where light and shadow dance between rooms and courtyards. Visitors meander through boxes in various states of closure and openness, with walls, roofs, and eaves that appear to be crafted from a single sheet of paper. The curved eaves represent a contemporary reinterpretation of classic curved roofing. The furniture within this temporary exhibition hall assumes the role of "permanent" inhabitants, while visitors are but transient guests. Consequently, we deliberately crafted corners within the space that are scaled to the dimensions of the furniture. This approach respects the formal logic of the boxes and ensures their autonomy. The aluminum studs, serving as the "cross-section" of the boxes, are intentionally revealed. Similarly, the raw texture of plywood is presented without embellishment. Architectural elements, interior elements, structural components, construction details, and material textures are exposed without hierarchy, showcasing their most elemental nature. Upon entering from a dimly lit entrance, visitors are enveloped in an immersive experience that transcends the mere observation of furniture exhibits or the navigation of the architectural space. I use one of my Favorite film "Sun Also Rises" as a blueprint and interpret it into spaces. As Culture Revolution remains a topic of forbidden zone, the film uses metaphor, chapterization and flashback to tell the story in a obscure way so as to pass censors. I abstract these three strategies and interpret them into metaphorical form, zoning and double circulation, so that the experience through the spiral slopes in the museum turns out to be a navigation in film. The museum is designed to be a scene of ruins. The dome is subdivided into three parts: galleries, meditation space and memorial space. Visitors can choose their own circulations, namely individual sequence between these three spaces, by using slope or stairs. project presents itself as a delicate sheet of paper floating at the water's edge, gracefully poised between the trees and the lake. It welcomes the dock of visitors, the change of the seasons, the whisper of the wind, and the resonant chime of the temple bell. The Hangzhou Buddhist College required an outdoor gathering space capable of hosting large-scale, temporary events. To prevent overwhelming its natural surroundings, we flattened the roof, allowing the eaves to gradually rise from ground level to the treetops. In this way, the building unifies West Lake and the sky, its silhouette seemingly at one with the horizon. The void created between the roof and the ground becomes a transitional space—a liminal realm through which both people and wind quietly flow. As visitors progress inward from the entryway, the space gradually expands. The interplay of the rising roofline and the descending floor creates a powerful spatial transition—from compression to release—guiding one toward the towering central altar, where the earthly gives way to the divine. A "forest" of slender, tapered columns rises to support the expansive yet ethereal roof. Positioned at the intersection of ancient Chinese calligraphy, contemporary architectural expression, and the natural mist-laden environment, the design aspires to bridge the poetic heritage of the past with the materiality of modernity. In Chinese painting, the technique of blurring eliminates extraneous detail, leaving behind shading, rhythm, and patterns—elements regarded as the essence of the work. This process of reduction simplifies perception, enabling us to focus on universal principles and reach deeper into the spiritual core. By embracing the philosophy of emptiness, we also attain a panoramic understanding of fullness and interconnectedness. Meanwhile, at the core of the architectural experience is the interplay between light, shadow, and materiality, with fog serving as a dynamic mediator that transforms the perception of space throughout the day. As visitors traverse the space, the fluctuating transparency creates a layered experience, reinforcing the notion that architecture can transcend physical boundaries and engage with the metaphysical.
