Uncertainty Network Office - UN-Office
Uncertainty Network Office (“UN-Office”)
Uncertainty Network Office (UN-Office) is an u(i)nformal, unlicensed and unprofitable collective of architects, urban designers, and artists. We refer to ourselves as an "office," although technically, we are not one. The use of "An" and "Un-" is not just a play on words but also reflects our emphasis on the themes of duality, contradiction, complexity, and ambiguity within architecture, art, urbanism, and human nature. We are captivated by the uncertainties inherent in post-modern and post-capitalist societies and are deeply intrigued by the networked convergence of diverse territories and hierarchies. Thus, we have chosen the name "Uncertainty Network Office."
UN-Office was established by Fang Xiaoyang in 2017. Fang envisioned it not as a geographically anchored, traditional office but as a community in the digital realm; a space without employees, only members. Each member of our group has their own daytime occupation, yet we come together in the evenings to discuss and design UN-Office projects. We engage in the development of hypothetical projects, with ourselves as the clients. While we do aspire to become a practical, official office with tangible built work, we are not rushing this transition. We relish the journey of exploring pathways from the grassroots to the mainstream.
